NASA VMS Static Structure

Structural Design & Analysis

Location:

Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Client:

NASA

General Contractor:

MTS Systems

ESI, under MTS Systems as the prime contractor, completed the structural analysis and design of the Static Structure for the Vehicle Motion Simulator (VMS) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The VMS is able to simulate all the motion a space vehicle could experience from rollout to launch.

ESI designed an extension of the existing concrete mat foundation at the site and a new high-stiffness steel reaction structure. Scope of work included conceptual development, structural analysis/FEA, design calculations, drawings, and construction administration.

The entire project team received a NASA Group Achievement Award for technical leadership.

ESI has now completed work for a second VMS structure at the same site.
